Happy Seaweek 2021! The purpose of this week is to call attention to the importance and diversity of our marine environments and to engage all Kiwis to look after Tangaroa’s realm. We are all responsible for taking care of our oceans and keeping them as healthy as possible. There are some really exciting opportunities during Seaweek to get involved with and see the sea for yourself! Seaweek starts today (March 6th) and goes till March 14th.

Coastal Care Workshop: Marine Photography

This workshop (Free!) is an exciting opportunity to gain knowledge on how to take a great photo of the coastal areas of New Zealand and more. Knowing how to protect your photography equipment (whatever it may be), use the right tools, and getting those angles to get the perfect shot of a marine animal!

Rod Morris is a wildlife photographer and filmmaker, with more than three decades of experience. He is a co-author of the Field Guide to the NZ Seashore with Sally Carson, Director of the NZ Marine Studies Centre. The workshop will cover photography down on the seashore, macro-photography indoors, how photography can be used to monitor biodiversity and better understand changes in the marine environment.

If you are interested in learning more about photographing marine life and how we can use it to care for our coast, come and learn some of Rod’s ‘tricks of the trade’. Dress appropriately for a visit to the shore, and bring your cameras and cell phones to photograph animals in tanks and in the intertidal zone, and get expert on-the-spot advice. Light lunch, tea and coffee provided. Registration required - https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/coastal-care-workshop-marine-photography-tickets-142151257237

Coastal Challenge

Send us a photo of a marine critter that you found along the NZ coast for us to share on our Facebook and Instagram page. It could be something you found in a rock pool or maybe just a shell you found washed up on the beach. The most engaged photography will be in to win a copy of the Collins Field Guide to the New Zealand Seashore by Sally Carson and Rob Morris.
