World Oceans Day - 8th June
How could you celebrate World Oceans Day this year?
Why not Adopt a Coast with volunteer organization Our Seas Our Future (OSOF). By ‘adopting’ a part of your favourite beach, you become responsible for keeping it clean and monitoring the seashore on a regular basis.
In Auckland OSOF can make your first trip to your coast easier by providing a class set of equipment, identification guide books, and expert volunteer assistance to run the event and share their knowledge about the marine environment. During your visit to your chosen beach, a small scale clean-up takes place where you collect trash along the coast, followed by monitoring the seashore using Marine Metre Squared (Mm2) to find out what plants and animals are living in the intertidal zone of the beach.
Contact Auckland Regional Coordinator Rhian Ingley at rhian@osof.org or see www.osof.org for more details.
In Dunedin OSOF are organising a coastal clean up on Saturday 6th June, meeting at St Kilda's Surf Lifesaving Club at 12 noon. See the OSOF event website for details.
